Description for luxury vehicle Velocette Venom Clubman, ex Thruxton 500 and Silverstone 1000kms racer

A very special Velocette Venom Clubman. The original owner was Pinks of Harrow who decided to go production racing. They took a Venom Clubman from the showroom floor , ran it in , stripped it and rebuilt it for production class racing. It was raced in the Thruxton 500 races in 1960, 1961 and 1962, the Silverstone 1000kms in 1961 and 1962.
In the 1961 Thruxton race it came 2nd in the 500 hundred class and 3rd overall although Pinks put in an objection as they maintained they won and there was a dispute over the laps covered. in the 1960 race it retired with and broken valve coller when it was winning, also it retired in the 1961 Silverstone 1000kms with primary chain trouble when in second place (after leading for a lot of the time) with 1/2 hour to go.
Ted Pink was a personal friend of Bertie Goodman MD of Velocettes and special parts were often tried, it was one of the first ,if not the first bike to be fitted with Thruxton followers . It was also tested around MIRA track by Bertie Goodman.
It has all the Clubman extras, alloy rims, "R" suffix gearbox, rev counter, rear sets, guard on oil tank, the optional GP carburettor and a John Tickle front brake.
The riders were Tom Thorp, Roy Mayhew, J C Simmonds. The 1960 Thruxton programme says Howard German partnered Tom Thorp but Mr German says he cannot remember partnering Tom Thorp.
After the Venom was sold ,I believe when Pinks went into receivership, the engine was stripped by Ralph Seymour , checked for wear and had the later breather modification carried out and reassembled.
All of the above is verified by , bills, a letter from an employee of Pinks that worked in the service department and magazine articles from the 1960s and a 4 page article in the classic Bike magazine from 1994. I also have The original log book with Ted Pinks signature as the first owner.
I have race programmes for the races it took part in, all the magazines in the photos have a mention of the bike, it is also shown in the 1962 Norton brochure alongside the Greenfield Norton , in Roy Bacons Velocette profile and Castrol achievements book for 1961. Mention is also made in other Velocette history books.
It can also be seen on the Pathe News site on the internet if you log into The Racing Film Star for the 1961 Thruxton 500,No 22 in this race and look for the 1962 Thruxton 500 race , you have fast forward a bit to the race and it is No 33 in this race. The 1960 Thruxton race can be found on you tube it is No 32 in this race.
The pink fairing was used during 1962, the original racing seat is there and the various sprockets for different circuits. A monbloc carburettor is fitted at the moment for easier starting and traffic manners. The yellow fairing is a spare clubman fairing if needed as it would be a shame to paint the pink fairing.
All the bolts are the correct original cadmium plated Rubbery Owen fittings and the kick start lever and gear lever have the correct and original satin chrome finish.
The mileage of 13,689 is correct and supported by various MOTs.
The bike is in excellent condition mechanically and cosmetically and the engine is the quietest I have heard.
Any questions please ask
